Yesterday news reached me that a boy who lived across the street from me growing up had died. I wouldn’t say Kalgin was a close friend, there was an age difference of 5 years (when two people are 11 and 6, respectively, they essentially live on seperate planets) but he was a fascinating (and smart!) kid and over the years I had often thought about him.

The Koch family moved into the house across the street around the time I was in 5th grade. Mari, the mother, was a physician and one of the most gentle souls you’d ever meet. Barry, the father, was a kind and gregarious man who worked as a P.E. teacher and a fisherman. They had a daughter and a son. Kristin, the older daughter quickly became part of the cabal of young girls (who were oddly enough all the same age) who roamed the nighborhood. Kalgin, the younger son, would ride his bicycle endlessly in the street during the summer, he often would come over and “help” my father with one of his endless building projects. He was an impish little boy with a keen intellect and a not-so-little wild streak. They were a loving and extroverted family and soon became an integral of the neighborhood. My parents befriended them along with several of the other “second wave” families that moved into neighborhood around that time.

When I was in 6th grade, the Koch kids rode the school bus along with all the other kids in the neighborhood. As one of the older kids I would sit as close as possible to the back (thinking there was something thrilling and illicit about be far from the driver), Kalgin being younger would sit near the front. One morning as the bus pulled into school, someone in the back was repeatedly shouting “Where are you from?” at someone in the front. At that moment, Kalgin jumped out of his seat, turned around in the aisle and screamed at the top of his lungs the answer of “FRESH FROM HELL!”. Everyone on the bus sat in the cold and dark for a few moments in stunned silence and then began laughing and applauding. It was one of the funniest things I have ever seen. For the rest of the school year people called him the “Fresh from Hell” kid. I don’t know if he liked the attention, when people would ask him where he was from he would meekly say “fresh from heaven“.

When I was in Jr. High I would watch him and his sister. His parents were some of the more stingy employers in the neighborhood, but looking back I was essentially being paid to watch TV and play with the kids. Sometimes Kalgin was a pleasure, sometimes he was a terror, but there was always something going on behind those eyes (his sister, by the way, was always a complete joy). In 1995, I won the Alaska State Geography bee, Mari took up a collection from the neighbors to give me some spending money when I was in Washington D.C. It was a completely unexpected gesture, and meant a lot to me at that awkward age that people (other than my parents) admired what I could do and, more importantly, cared about me.

In 1997, my family had to move to Fairbanks. To send us off the neighbors organized a block BBQ to say farewell, the Kochs (especially Mari) were some of the prime movers in this effort. That first year in Fairbanks we often visited Anchorage and went by the old neighborhood; we made sure to visit our former neighbors across the street.

In the spring of 1998 Mari was killed in a tragic hunting accident. We heard the devastating news in Fairbanks; my mother made the trip to Anchorage to attend the memorial. After that Barry sold the house and we lost touch with the family. Once in a while we would hear third-hand about how they were doing, but we didn’t make it back to the old neighborhood much any more.

Kalgin died running a race in the back trails in the woods near the old neighborhood. I imagine he had run those trails many times before. He collapsed and never woke up.

In my mind Kalgin is still the 11 year old boy I last saw him as. I never had the chance to meet him as an adult, I think I would have still liked him. I read in his obituary that he was a gifted student and athlete. This fall he would have been a senior at the University of Arizona where he was majoring in geography.

I don’t understand why tragedy has to befall some of the best people, or why some families are fated to have more than their share.To me he will always be that achingly unique kid across the street. I think if I had been a couple years younger, and he a couple years older, we probably would have been the dearest of friends.

Last summer I talked my sister into getting a Netflix Roku player, she loves it and describes it as “like having free pay-per-view”. Being such a tremendous technology nerd, I couldn’t let my sister have something so awesome and not have one myself… so I asked for and received a Roku for my birthday.

Roku works beautifully and the picture/sound quality will astound anyone who has only watched streaming video via YouTube. In terms of quality it is close to a DVD, and I can only consistently pull a 2 (of 4) in terms of quality.

It is my understanding that the operating system is some form of Linux, which is an interesting fact considering that the only other means to watch Netflix streaming is on Windows machines with Windows Media Player. I am not sure how dependent Netflix is on Microsoft technology for its streaming, but it does raise some interesting questions. The processor is by chipmaker (and former division of Philips) NXP and is as best as I can tell ~~an ARM variant~~ (more digging reveals it to be a MIPS) with media specific features. It looks like the DRM and content decompression is handled by specialty hardware. Upgradable system software is held in flash memory and video is buffered on a seemingly paltry 64MB of RAM. I was surprised to find out how little RAM is in there considering the way memory prices have recently cratered, and the generally hefty nature of video data… I suppose that’s what happens when designing for a sub-$100 price point. There is no fan or hard drive, so it is absolutley silent… which is great because I have it on the TV in my bedroom.

Unfortunately I have Clearwire wireless broadband, which is especially prone to bandwidth fluctuations. I supposedly have 1.5Mb download speed, but that depends on the weather and if any birds fly by the house (don’t get me wrong, it’s either Clearwire or dial-up, so I’m not complaining). My big gripe is that the small buffer size in the player makes the video stream very susceptible to changing network conditions. I am sure this is rarely an issue with cable or DSL connections, but it is pretty baltant when depending on a WiMAx connection. Often the player will detect improved speeds and halt playing to rebuffer at a higher quality, only to fail a few moments later when the speed drops off again– I call this the “greedy Roku” problem.

It seems to me that a solution to this problem would be to simply add a “performance” option in the system setup. By default, the system automatically tries to maximize quality, rebuffering at higher quality whenever it determines it can stream at a higher rate, even if that rate is not sustainiable. If an option to “minimize interruptions” were added, it would allow the user to sacrifice some quality to achieve better performance (kind of like what most video cards allow). An ancillary feature could be to automatically switch between modes after a certain number of interruptions occur, something like:

mode.set=quality;
if stream_break then interruption_count++;
if interruption_count > 5 then mode.set=performance;

OK, that’s ugly pseudocode, but you get the idea. A user could set the number of tollerable interruptions (5 in the example) in the preferences and enjoy maximal quality as long as it is possible while not having to go to the preferences in the middle of a movie.

Despite my singular gripe, I love my Roku and would readily suggest one to anyone with a Netflix account and broadband Internet (though I would suggest one check if they have a monthly bandwidth cap before streaming HD movies). It is supposed to be getting additional video channels in the near future which will reportedly include pay-per-view movies via Amazon.
